Fish of New Zealand

Isolation shaped its freshwater fauna. Separated from other landmasses for millions of years, the country holds few native species, but an unusual proportion of them spend part of their life at sea and part in rivers. The salmonids introduced in the nineteenth century established so thoroughly that they now define the country’s angling reputation.

River clarity is exceptional. Many are fished on sight, spotting the fish before presenting anything at all — a practice that demands stealth and water-reading far more than tackle.

At sea, the shelf is narrow: real depth is reachable a short distance from shore, which puts open-ocean species within range of a short trip. The water, cool and well mixed, stays productive all year.
