Fish of the United Kingdom

No point in the country is far from the sea, and that sea works. Tidal ranges on the west coast are among the largest on the continent, uncovering vast foreshores and creating the currents that govern all shore fishing. The east coast, more sheltered, offers steadier conditions and different species.

Inland, the chalk streams of the south are a rare case: fed by underground aquifers, they hold a remarkably steady temperature and flow all year, which makes them exceptionally clear salmonid water. Further north, Scottish rivers and lochs present an entirely different face, colder and peat-stained.

It is also here that modern match fishing and carp fishing were codified as they are practised across Europe today. Much of the tackle and method used on the continent comes directly from that work.
