Fish of Colombia

The double sea frontage is its distinguishing feature. The Pacific, turbid, warm and highly productive, borders a coast of mangrove and forest; the Caribbean, clearer and calmer, offers reefs and lagoons. The two share almost no species, and the country lets you fish both in the same week.

Inland, the Andes split into three ranges that isolate the basins from one another. The Magdalena, running between two of them, developed a fauna of its own through that enclosure, with many species found nowhere else.

The southeast belongs to the Amazon and Orinoco basins, with the flood regime that characterises them. These tropical waters carry considerable diversity, still only partly documented.
