Fish of Portugal

The coast, facing due west along almost its whole length, takes Atlantic swell without obstruction. That constant exposure creates dynamic conditions — mixed water, food kept in motion — and shore fishing that stays active year-round, alternating open beaches with rocky cliffs.

Offshore upwelling plays a decisive part. It brings nutrients back towards the surface and sustains high productivity, which explains the richness of Portuguese coastal water despite a southerly latitude.

Inland, the Tagus, the Douro and the Guadiana finish their course after crossing the peninsula, and their dams have formed large impoundments. Less busy than the coast, these reservoirs carry a quiet but well-established freshwater fishery.
